Apple made photo provenance a $1,199 feature, and the check is done by eye
Apple Reference Image signs pixels at the sensor and develops them in Private Cloud Compute, but the APIs let apps view the negative rather than verify it.
Apple introduced Apple Reference Image on 9 September, a photo-provenance feature that works only on the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, which start at $1,199 and $1,299. A new sensor in the Main camera signs its pixels at capture; the signed data goes to Private Cloud Compute, which develops it into what Apple calls an unalterable reference image, viewable in Photos next to the edited version "like a digital negative."
So the answer to synthetic images is a $1,199 phone and a round trip through Apple's servers.
Read the mechanism slowly, because most of the coverage skipped it. The sensor signs. Apple's cloud develops. You compare two pictures with your own eyes. Apple's own words are that reference images can be viewed "to visually compare the two assets and determine if any edits were made", and the APIs shipping in iOS, iPadOS and macOS 27 are for third-party apps "to enable viewing of these reference images."

And that distinction is the whole business story. A cryptographic provenance chain lets any newsroom, insurer, court or platform check a file at scale without asking the manufacturer for anything. A digital negative you look at runs at the speed of one pair of human eyes per photograph (and the negative itself lives where Apple keeps it). If you are a wire desk handling thousands of submissions a day, one of those is a workflow and the other is a nice feature on a nice phone.
There is another tell one sentence later. Apple says image metadata and "upcoming support for the SynthID standard" will help users spot AI-generated or edited images. SynthID is Google DeepMind's invisible watermark, embedded across Google's generative products and detected by Google's own technology. Apple did not build a detector. Instead it adopted one, and the one it adopted belongs to the company it competes with on phones and takes search money from.
The release names exactly one standard, and it is Google's. As far as we can tell that is a choice rather than an omission (Apple does not usually forget to mention a consortium it belongs to).
Our read: Apple has decided provenance is a device feature rather than an internet protocol, and priced it like a device feature. Commercially that is defensible. Publicly it is thin. Worse off is the photojournalist Apple named in its own copy — their pictures carry a trustworthy origin only when the outlet, the wire and the reader all sit inside Apple software, and their editors mostly do not.
But the counter-argument is strong, and we would rather state it properly. A signed sensor is genuinely hard engineering. Everyone else ships metadata that a screenshot destroys. Shipping something narrow that works probably beats shipping a standard nobody adopts, and Apple ships to hundreds of millions of cameras, while a standard with no cameras is a PDF.
So here is the test. Pre-orders open on 12 September and the phones arrive on the 18th. If within six months a major news agency says it accepts Apple reference images as part of its verification process, Apple will have turned a feature into an institution. If it stays a Photos-app comparison that roughly nobody opens, this was a keynote slide with a very good sensor behind it.
Either way, ask the harder question the next time a camera claims it can prove something. Prove it to whom, and who has to be online for the proof to work?
