Apple's first Ternus keynote: a $1,999 foldable, a 2nm chip, and a Siri that will not ship in the EU

iPhone Duo pre-orders open October 16. Siri AI arrives in beta with iOS 27 on September 14, minus the European Union. The foldable is the headline. The Siri footnote is the strategy.

Apple unveiled its first foldable, the iPhone Duo, at $1,999 for 256GB on Wednesday, eight days after John Ternus replaced Tim Cook as chief executive. Pre-orders open October 16 and the phone reaches stores October 23, five weeks behind the iPhone 18 Pro ($1,199) and Pro Max ($1,299), which ship September 18. All three run the A20 Pro, the first smartphone chip on a 2-nanometer process.

Cook opened the event and handed over with "That's your guy." Ternus then spent his first minutes on stage not on hardware but on a definition. The ideal AI device, he said, would know your personal context, always be with you, run models on-device and reach the cloud, and have a big display, good cameras and long battery life. "In other words, you would arrive at something remarkably familiar, because there's no product in the world better designed to be your intelligent personal hub than iPhone."

You can guess where that speech was going. The interesting part is what it left out.

What was announced

The Duo folds a 7.6-inch inner display (50 percent larger than the 18 Pro Max screen, by Apple's count) into a passport-sized body with a 5.4-inch outer display. It uses Touch ID in the side button rather than Face ID, hides a FaceTime camera under the inner panel, is eSIM-only worldwide, and brings Split View, two apps side by side, to an iPhone for the first time. The hinge has more than 100 components. Storage runs to 2TB, which Decrypt puts near $3,000.

The 18 Pro's camera gains a variable aperture with six laser-cut blades and an opt-in "Apple Reference Image" mode: the sensor signs every pixel, and Private Cloud Compute develops a tamper-evident reference copy that sits beside the edited photo like a negative. Reference capture won't be available at launch in the EU, nor at all in China.

Then Siri AI, the rebuilt assistant Apple first showed at WWDC in June. It arrives in beta with iOS 27 on September 14, in English, on iPhone 15 Pro and later. Apple's own footnote is the important sentence of the day: "Siri AI will not be initially available in the EU on iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS. Features that rely on Siri AI will also not be available in the EU." Decrypt reports the assistant runs on Google's Gemini under a deal "reportedly worth about $1 billion a year." Apple's release does not mention Google at all.

Apple also introduced "Audio Intelligence" on the Watch, which TechCrunch describes as letting you "rewind moments and remember details from daily conversations." M.G. Siegler's reaction had the whole tension in it.

M.G. Siegler@mgsiegler

It will be FASCINATING to see what the reaction is to Audio Intelligence. Apple is saying all the right things, of course. But it's still always listening! On the flip side, it will make the Apple Watch even more of a must-buy for some. #AppleEvent

Our read

The foldable is the product. The Siri footnote is the company. Apple just shipped its most expensive iPhone into a launch window where the assistant it built the keynote around is unavailable to roughly 450 million EU residents, and where the model behind that assistant, if Decrypt's reporting holds, is rented from Google. Ternus's line about privacy ("others see [users' personal] data as something to collect and store") was aimed, as far as we can tell, at exactly the company Apple is paying for Siri. That contradiction is probably the story of the Ternus era, and the Duo is a very good way to keep people from looking at it for a quarter.

Will the Duo sell? We'd bet it sells out its first allocation regardless. Kimmonismus, nobody's idea of an Apple loyalist, called it "the first time I see a real use case for a foldable device because the entire OS is tailored to its use," and launching it five weeks late with its own pre-order window reads like supply discipline rather than hesitation. Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 now competes on crease visibility against a titanium plate and a nano-texture panel, at parity pricing, and we would not want to be selling it.

Our expectation: Siri AI ships in at least one EU country before the Duo stops absorbing the attention, which we'd put at Apple's spring earnings call in late April 2027. If Apple is still writing "not initially available in the EU" in April, the Gemini deal, not the Digital Markets Act, is the reason, and we'll say so.
