SpaceX is retiring the Cursor brand, and OpenAI's models leave on November 12

Gergely Orosz listed three renames on September 9th. The Cursor Community is now the SpaceX AI Community. Cursor Ambassadors are now Grok Bot Ambassadors. Café Cursor, the meetup series that ran in Paris, Berlin, Barcelona, Milan and a dozen other cities, has been cancelled.

He is probably right about the direction, and early on the timing. We opened cursor.com/ambassadors and cursor.com/community on the afternoon of the 9th: the first is still headed "Cursor Ambassadors" and still invites you to "shape Cursor's future", and the second is still a wall of Cafe Cursor photographs from Vancouver, Cluj-Napoca, Villahermosa and Ho Chi Minh City. So the retirement is happening in the Discord and the ambassador list first, with the marketing site trailing. That is the usual order (the pages a company forgets are the ones nobody has a ticket for), and it means the rename is being run by community staff, not by a comms plan.

The rename is not the expensive part.

On August 28th OpenAI published a note saying it intends to wind down the contract that supplies its models to Cursor, "with a proposed shutoff date of November 12, 2026". The stated reason is blunt: "we cannot be confident that SpaceX will use our technology within our terms of service, based on our experience with Elon Musk's companies violating contracts." OpenAI says it is giving the maximum notice its contract allows, and that its upcoming Astra model will not be supplied at all.

So count what is actually leaving the product. The name, the community, and one of the two frontier labs whose models made a model-agnostic editor worth paying for.

Nine weeks from the 9th.

What did SpaceX buy, then? Distribution. Cursor's own product lead had Grok Bot on every Pro account by August 26th — "grok bot is now available for everyone on cursor pro!" — and two days later was pointing users at guides collected by "the @SpaceXAI team". An editor with millions of installed seats is probably the cheapest way anyone has found to put a house model in front of working programmers every day, and you do not need the brand for that (Grok Bot arrived on Pro before most users had heard the acquisition had closed).

You need the install base and the default.

Our read: the multi-model Cursor is finished, and the November date is when it stops being arguable. We would expect OpenAI models gone from Cursor on or about November 12th, and the product shipping under a Grok or SpaceX name before the end of March 2027 (call it 70/30 on the second half). A renewed OpenAI contract would kill that call outright. So would Anthropic's models staying the default in the composer after November, which is the version of events where SpaceX has bought a neutral tool and kept it neutral.

The fair objection is that acquirers rename things and it usually means nothing. Renaming an ambassador programme costs a Notion edit, and plenty of products keep shipping happily under a new logo.

But look at what came with it. On September 8th Orosz reported that SpaceX Comms had blocked a Cursor engineer from appearing on his podcast, to talk about mostly non-Cursor subjects, because "they only allow podcasts to cover Grok Bot right now". Companies that intend to keep a brand alive do not usually stop their engineers from saying its name out loud.

One caveat we would keep: the rename list is one person's account, and Cursor has not confirmed it. Orosz is careful and he named specifics, so we would put this at very likely rather than certain, and the public pages will settle it within a few weeks either way.

If you have a team on Cursor, the useful question is not what the editor is called in December. It is which model your prompts were tuned against, and whether you have run them through anything else since August. November 12th is a Thursday.
